The research question is interesting. But as you say, there are many factors affecting the students' academic performance apart from the athletic participation amount. Just take English Language proficiency as an example, the students' examination scores depend much on the innate ability, the family backgrounds (if the student's parent can teach him or the student has many extra English lessons outside schools, no matter how much or how less athletic participation he engaged, his English marks will not be low.
May I have the following suggestions:
The student samples should be carefully selected, for example, with very similar family background, have similar first term English marks in addition to the same class, same gender. By this way, some disturbing factors are avoided.

Anyway, your presentation is well organized with detailed elaboration.
